I read about this label on Smoda a few weeks ago, and it’s been on my mind since. It’s M2Malletier, a handbags label with architectural design founded by Melissa Losada and Marcela Velez, two Colombian women based in Barcelona. They met at Parsons School of Design New York, and launched their first collection last September. Melissa had worked for a year and a half in Vogue US, then moved to Paris, and finally arrived at Barcelona, where they began their project. The idea of the original metal handle came from a book of vintage medical tools.
They are already on Net-à-porter (all sold out), Moda Operandi, and many fashion editors are a fan: Miroslava Duma, Caroline Issa… Melissa and Marcela knew how important it was to have the it-girls on their side, so they called eight of them to offer some handbags. They wore the bags during fashion week, and thanks to being captured by the streetstyle photographers, the bags reached all corners of the Earth. Soon, tens of stores were calling Melissa and Marcela to sell their creations. Good design is always successful.
The prices are not so great (over $800). We’ll wait and see if they launch a low-cost edition…
