Shishi Yamazaki is Japanese animator and mask designer. She was born in 1989 and studied Design at the Tokyo University of Arts. She creates these beautiful shortfilms by rotoscoping, a technique that consists in tracing over footing, frame by frame, to achieve motion. It was used in Snow White by Walt Disney, for example, or in Betty Boop’s cartoons. She uses her watercolor, crayon and pencil drawings as a base, and the result is lovely. Shishi has collaborated with brands such as Prada and Shiseido, and has participated in several exhibitions.
One of my favourite videos is YA-NE-SEN a Go-Go, in which Shishi herself is seen dancing on the streets of Yanaka, Nezu and Sendagi, three districts in Tokyo where she grew up. The soundtrack is Yokomo by Yamasuki. If you need some cheerfulness on a Monday, this will do it.
